General Meeting
June 26th (Friday)       Agenda:  A Night in Tropical New Guinea

Dr. Robert Sprackland, authority on monitor lizards
Dr. Robert Sprackland

Our guest speaker in June will be Dr. Robert Sprackland, noted author, herpetologist, and world-recognized authority on monitor lizards. Dr. Sprackland has studied herpetology and paleontology for over 40 years, and holds multiple degrees in zoology, including a Masters from San Jose State University.

In 1998 Dr. Sprackland co-founded the on-line Virtual Museum of Natural History (VMNH). As director of VMNH, he conducted biodiversity research in New Guinea and Australia which resulted in a television program, several published articles, and four books.

Dr. Sprackland's presentation will include photographic herpetological highlights from Papua New Guinea. He will also bring copies of his newly published, revised book "Giant Lizards", and will autograph copies of his book.

Giant Lizards
completely revised and expanded second edition

by VMNH Director Robert Sprackland
with contributions by leading breeders of giant lizards.

This all-new book is filled with updated information, greatly surpassing the 1992 original in data. Written for zoo keepers and serous herpetologists, this new release of the classic that marked the beginning of the massive monitor/tegu popularity that continues to this day.

General Meeting
July 24th (Friday)       Agenda:  To be announced

General Meeting
August 28th (Friday)       Agenda:  TURTLE and TORTOISE Night

  • What's the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?
  • What is a side-neck turtle?
  • How big will my turtle get?
  • What should I feed my tortoise?
  • How do I know when my turtle is sick?

If you would like to find out the answer to these questions, or if you have other questions about turtles or tortoises, then you won't want to miss our next general meeting. This will be a good chance to see and learn about these wonderfully unique shelled creatures.

Gary and Ginger Wilfong from the Bay Area Turtle and Tortoise Rescue, as well as other serious turtle and tortoise enthusiasts, will be on hand to answer questions. We also hope that members of the Silicon Valley Turtle and Tortoise Club, SVTTC will join us for this event.

There are sure to be a variety of tortoises as well as some box turtles, and maybe even some aquatic turtles. Come and see how different they can be, and learn about where they come from and the individual needs of the various turtles and tortoises.

Pepperwood Field Herping Campout

Pepperwood Ranch Preserve, Sonoma County
Saturday-Sunday,   May 30-31, 2009
About Pepperwood Preserve

The 3,117 acre Pepperwood Ranch nature preserve is now operated by the Pepperwood Foundation, with a mission to preserve this beautiful open space in its natural state for current and future generations to enjoy and study.

Pepperwood, located in Sonoma County, north of San Francisco Bay, between the Sonoma and Napa Valleys, features incredible views and rich biodiversity, including nine different plant communities and a variety of native reptile and amphibian species. While we have called this a "Field Herping Campout", in reality, it is hardly camping. Lodging will be in cabins with bunk beds, electricity, and a complete kitchen - nearly all the amenities of home - but with a glorious view and peaceful surroundings away from the stressors of modern life.

Sign-up is a must for this event, and there is a $10.00 registration fee to hold your place.

Once again Tom Harrison, a long-time BAARS member who has a special interest in and extensive knowlege of native amphibians, will be leading day hikes to the vernal ponds at J. D. Grant Park. This year two hikes have been scheduled. Being a month apart, there will be a different set of animals to be seen on each hike.

These hikes will feature a visit to 2 vernal ponds to look for amphibians, including their eggs and larvae. Be prepared to walk in water, and have some nets and containers for viewing what you catch. We will also be looking under rocks on the way, for lizards and snakes.  The hike to the first vernal pond is down a hill, but only a short distance. The second pond is about an hour hike away, and involves hills.

This event will be cancelled/rescheduled if it rains since the trails get slippery when wet.

Pinnacles Field Herping Campout

Pinnacles Campground (At the east side entrance of the Pinacles National Monument)
Friday-Sunday,  April 18-20, 2008

BAARS is planning its annual field herping event at the Pinnacles Campground for April 18-20, 2008. We will have campsites for Saturday night, right outside the National Monument. This should be a great time of year to go to the Pinnacles, since it tends to get too hot and dry in the middle of the summer.

The campground has showers and bathrooms with hot and cold running water, a convenience store and a swimming pool, so this really can't be considered "roughing" it. We use the campsite as a base of operations, with day and night hikes where the main activity is herping (which is restricted to catch and release, of course). The Pinnacles has a lot of diverse herp fauna compared to what you see around the Bay Area, including whiptails, coastal horned lizards, and even California Legless Lizards.

Sign-up is a must for this event. Also there is a $10.00 registration fee to hold your place.

This has been a fun venue which we've done since April, 2001. Happy Hollow is an accredited Zoological institution with a lot of cool animals. Luckily, they have both a park side and a zoo side, which eliminates some quarantine issues. BAARS educational shows are held on the Park side, so go to the left at the main entrance, then follow the sidewalk down to the right.
This is a great show to participate in if you don't know what to expect or are new to educating the public about your animals. It is always a fun show, with steady, enthusiastic crowds of both adults and kids.
